Convergence- Who Are We? Who Do We Want To Be?

The “church rules” that were set up in the bible were not said by Jesus, they were put in place to fix the problems and sins of the church because church structure facilitates our obedience in God.

The way the government works in the church is not important- it is the fruit.

Fruit of the church should be;
(Taken from Acts 2)

- Praising God
- To look after each other
- Led by the Holy Spirit
- Fellowship
- Set apart
- Fulfills needs
- Practice gifts of the Holy Spirit
- Repent and be baptized
- Share everything
- Everyone Participates
- Numbers added daily
- Committed

What do we (Convergence) value? What are our narratives?

- Social justice
- Participatory salvation (faith without works is dead, works without faith is legalistic)
- Sacrificial generosity
- Holistic lifestyle (no difference between our “sacred” and “private” space)
- Kingdom responsibility (we have skills/gifts- steward and use them)
God’s reality is of personal consequence- if you believe in God, everything you do had personal consequence.
- Purposeful community

What are the church functions?
- worship
- prayer
- teaching
- fellowship and support
- finances
- service (local)
- world outreach/ missions
- share together
- training/ discipling
- leadership

Convergence: an interdependent church (with Broadway)
What does that mean? Look like?

- Unique vision (doesn’t have to be a “contra-vision”)
- Worship- focused on our narratives
- Leadership- we participate with Broadway in the next leadership search. Broadway recognizes core team’s vested interest and experience.
- Finances- take responsibility for Convergence and Convergence Missions- If you are participating in the kingdom you should be tithing
- Prayer, Teaching, and Fellowship- internal
- Service (local) and World Missions- We need to be getting involved
- Training/ discipling- should be intentionally teaching- starting with the basics.

So, this is who we are and who we want to be (as discussed on Thursday, November 2, 2006)

  • I really think the most important part of this is our narratives. They're kind of like core values in that everything we do is meant to express them. They tell the story of who we are and where we want to go as a group. If you remember nothing else, remember our community narratives.

  • the blog needs some love.

  • yes Love is good... i did alot of thinging over the 3 days traveling on bus...(which is now on my blog.. after realizing i didnt post what i wrote about the trip) i thought alot about love for tree days and we as servants take for granted what love we give out .... for those who would say speak for yourself i will but i know im not the only one.... bare with me here now I have a hugh heart for the homeless.... my actions dont show it but that cause i wont let the love come out ... Im afaird to take that step! the step? getting rid of the shyness that has become me... " i cant do that... "that would invole speaking and being around lots crowds of people." you'd think 27 years id get over it... but yeah No.. well anyway... back to the point of take love for granted as an example bantering back and forth about what convergence stands for or what kind group is it... thats all find but what are we doing while were getting to that point...
yup convergence gives money to buy wells oversea's ... well "Jane doe" goes bedless in poorest area in canada... you know the place where convergence was strategicly placed you know it just didnt happen to plop down in that area to make an impact in... because that where there was land to put it there ... cause theres more to it then that we've all walk downtown vancity we've seen eastside how bad it is how sick and evil it is! why is it that the "mission" is always making an impact in other cites... and not at home... all the Narratives are awesome and totally are right...but the narratives should start at home first
Love the Home first then go to the rest of the world... are we taking for granted the love for our home?

if im wrong and you think it all jiberish then please tell me the thoughts and hold a brother accountable...just my thought hope it made some sence

  • church hmmmm - shouldn't it be clear and simple what our vision needs to be - this whole thing with getting into small groups and discussing what the leadership needs to be doing - I mean isn't the bible pretty clear on the functions of the church? I'm glad that it left out the form of church - if the bible said get into groups of three when you pray - then that's all we would be doing. I kind of feel for pastor Norb - who is dragging him through these "journey forward' exercises? Most likely a church consultant that has never pastored a large church like ours and it's all book knowledge - and all of a sudden he is an expert for Broadway. Why don't we just do what Jesus asked - to be a witness to our neighbors and friends - and to live like Christ during the week - so that when we gather on Sunday we will have functioned as a church during the week - and won't blame all our laziness on the church and it's leadership! I remember pastor Bradford saying that church is not rocket science - and wasn't he a rocket scientist? I don't know - why do we complicate things so? any thoughts here - As a young adult I'm a bit repulsed by all the drama.
Let's ask everyone else what the problem is - instead of calling out to God to...I think this might be in the word - bring a light unto our church path, lamp for our feet. Or will we need more talking to determine what the best way is to discern the light and the lamp?

  • I think this poor blog needs to be updated.

By Anonymous Anonymous, at 4:06 PM

  • I think the leadership needs to be updated that the updateing needs to be updated so that the people who want to be updated are updated!
If those who do the updateing are too busy to do the updateing - then they need to be updated with new updaters.
    from the un-updated!

  • I'm not sure if people are checking the comments anymore on this post, but just in case...

The thing about the wells is this: we do need to take responsibility for things on a global scale.

I agree with you that we also need to take responsibility for the people in our own city. What are you doing about it? It only takes one person to affect the life of another. Do we just wait for leadership to show us what we are supposed to be doing and wait for them to take the lead? The last time I checked, we all had the Holy Spirit in us, leading us, checking us, burdening us, growing us. Take HIS lead, and do something about it.

    Awesome.

  • I don't think people are checking this blog out either - because the Broadway young adult web site still has dates on it from March 2006!!?? - so just wait a few months and you can repeat what was on here from last year for march 2007. There is no dialogue - just what was already repeated - I'm done with this site - for checking - too out of date and not relevant for my life any more. and ... yes we will eventually walk away and take responsibility for our city - but we still look for leadership - everyone needs leadership in their lives. Kind of arrogant comments above I think. Frustration, not patience brings that out. At times if there is no leadership - we will walk away.

  • i see the comments above about the lack of use of this site...but I don't know when they were written. 3:04? Which day? Which month? i think the blog needs some work....

  • well Dawn you do have a point... i should of took the lead and step out on that... I do too much of the "back seat driver guy" thing always waiting for someone esle too get excitied then i'll follow... its sad but thats how i roll... so its frustration in myself that i dont step out... and when no one else talks about it... im like easy way out of not taking the lead..
