Spiritual Gifts (part 2)

Read: 1 Corinthians 12

Vs. 7- A spiritual gift is given to each of us as a means of helping the entire church.

So, what is the church?? What is Ministry?

There is no “Secular” space. Everything was created by God, so everything is part of God’s Kingdom. You “church” or “ministry” is the ENTIRE WORLD!

Matt: 28: 18-20 says:

18 Jesus came and told his disciples, "I have been given complete authority in heaven and on earth.

19 Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.

20 Teach these new disciples to obey all the commands I have given you. And be sure of this: I am with you always, even to the end of the age."

3 Gift Clusters

Love Gifts- are gifts of action! Showing God’s love through giving and serving

Power Gifts- to display Gods AWESOME power- to make God known through Miracles, healings etc.

Word Gifts- To help people understand who God is and what God wants to do through description and teaching

-No one person has ALL the gifts; however you can operate in all of them when the Holy Spirit directs and moves you to.

-The Spirit decides what gifts we GET to work in. Gifts are only in our care. A servant can’t give away their “bag of gold”.

-No Gift is bigger or better than another gift!! Every Gift has and important role in God’s Kingdom.

-You can’t have an unbalanced body. Every part is needed.

So, If you are a little Toe- WIGGLE!!! (WARNING: Corrie will irritate you, until you wiggle!)

Read: Matthew 25:14-30

(The story of the Talents/ 3 servants)

Back Round: When Jesus Spoke this parable he was speaking to the 12 disciples- they were already dedicated followers, they had been with Jesus for a few years already.

What’s this story all about??

-God gives 3 servants a bag of gold/talents (to one he gave 5 talents, to another 2, and to the 3rd servant he gave 1)

-The first 2 servants were faithful- The Master gave them a reward: They were invited to a PARTY to celebrate and they were given more RESPONSIBILITY

-The 3rd servant was not faithful and he was “cast into the outer darkness”

All 3 of them had a Servant/Master Relationship, but one of them was still cast into the outer darkness!! What does that mean for you??

THINK ABOUT IT!

2 Comments:

  • Some theologians (allegorists) of late have challenged the theology of hell, and reintrpreted Jesus' descriptions of hell as contemporary Jewish apocalyptic literature (Brian MacLaren is the most well known). I am yet undecided on what I believe about hell. However, even in this most liberal approach to a theology of "outer darkness" and "gnashing of teeth" the idea that Jesus was trying to communicate was that of chaos / anarchy, which I do think is a beautiful picture here. The implication is this: if you don't leverage your gifts to benefit the kingdom of God, your life will end up in chaos / anarchy at best (eternal concsious torment at worst). Welcome to the kingdom of God.

  • I guess God would have a pretty good idea about the best way to make hell the worst thing ever possible. Something to do with Him being all-know etc.. So maybe fire and brimstone was a human creation? After all, His thoughts are higher than ours...

Trust Jesus to always be talking on more than one level.

How does this "cast into outter darkness" bit play into your (Corrie's) theory that Christians bypass judgement day?
