Sex – Part 1

God created sex as a living metaphor for his relationship with us.

God < -- > Israel

Man < -- > Woman

Jesus < -- > Church

Read: Genesis 1 – 3

“In the beginning”

-Man was made by God, from the dust of the earth. Woman was made by God, from a part of man therefore man and women are not complete alone. We need relationship. *side note: God was fully capable to make woman without part of man but chose to make woman ‘from man’

God designed relationship to be like Him; God is 3 in 1. The trinity. The Father, Son and Holy Spirit.

Nothing was missing from Adam but Adam needed the gift of community (something was removed from a whole and made into two parts- together they are whole).

God’s first command was to multiply.

In Genesis 3 sin comes into play: The consequence of sin (not a curse):

- In verse 16 God said to Eve:“...you will desire to control your husband,
but he will rule over you.”

Her desire is to have relationship without authority

His desire is to have authority without relationship

Men and women don’t think the same:

- Men are rational intuitive thinking

- Women are affective intuitive thinking

Men and women are not equal they are interdependent.

Read: Song of Songs 3 – 5
(The story of intimate relationship between a man and his wife, written by Solomon and his wife to reflect the relationship between the trinity)

Song of Solomon 3 (the “honeymoon period” things are going great!)

The woman speaks of the man in terms a man would appreciate and understand

(e.g. His Chariot, His Army, His sword skills, etc.)

Song of Solomon 4 (still the “honeymoon period”)

The man speaks of the woman in terms a woman would appreciate and understand

(e.g. her beauty, her eyes, her flawless smile, her skin etc.)

In Song of Solomon 3:5 woman says: “Do not awaken love until the time is right” – translation: it’s worth the wait! So wait!

Song of Solomon 5 (something goes wrong)

The woman’s lover knocks at the door, but by the time she gets to the door (after making herself “presentable”) he is gone. So she searches for him but is found by the watchmen. They beat her and strip her of her veil (a great shame).

What does that say for our relationship with God??

Read: Hosea 2 - 4

God used Hosea’s life to demonstrate Israel’s adultery towards God.

Israel worshiped baal- the God of fertility. They worshiped him by having sex with prostitutes in the temple (only Men could worship baal).

In chapter 2 God goes from being very harsh and threatening about Israel to being full of love, promising peace, healing, reconciliation, gentleness, justice, unfailing love, and protection if Israel responds to Gods call to “win her back once again”.

God wanted to redeem Israel. God can redeem any relationship.

Part 2... coming soon
