The long-awaited update.

To my dearest readers,

Does the cliché saying, “absence makes the heart grow fonder” translate correctly into cyberspace? What are summers for if not letting some of the details slip?

But enough of the fluff: without further ado, I am pleased to present you with the update e-buffet…

Those red letters. Thanks to everyone who joined us this summer as we dove into Jesus’ words. Also, thanks to Jesus for giving us such good stuff to chew on. But alas, it is that time of year again where the summer draws to a close, as it inevitably does. Wipe away your single tear and keep reading for some of the fantastic plans in store for September…

New formats. As of September, we will be adopting a new format. Each week Convergence will be rotating between three blocks: prayer, teaching, and worship. Each Thursday will have two blocks, i.e. week one: prayer & teaching; week two: teaching & worship; week three: worship & prayer.
[sidebar: please note that we will be continuing with the 7pm start time = more time for more goodness]

New initiatives. Amid various discussions, we keep coming up with new answers to our favorite question,

So now what?

In the midst of each discussion, it is our goal to walk away with a few practical and attainable ideas: changing the way we behave, to change the way we think, ultimately changing the way we live.

One such answer takes the shape of a year-long challenge to provide 5 villages with clean water facilities by building wells. The well-challenge is a product of some simple math calculated by the book club when we finished reading Rich Christians in an Age of Hunger – we estimated that the cost of building 5 wells is easily within 1-2% of our combined Convergence income. What kinds of things have you been spending 1% of your income on lately? Wouldn’t it be easy to offer just 1% to some of our neighbors? This challenge kicked off August 10, 2006 and we've given ourselves until August 11, 2007 to complete the project.

Speaking of the book club. The book club meets every other week at 6:30pm, pre-Convergence. A New Kind of Christian is the next book we will be reading. Brian McLaren, a pastor and author, writes this narrative discussion as he negotiates the current gap between a post-modern society and conservative evangelicals. This book provides important historical and theological context to help the emerging church find its footing.

Spiritual giftedness. One of the emerging themes of the summer has been identifying and using our God-given talents more fully. In order to assist you better, we’ll be taking inventory in September. Stay tuned for more details…
